Guest Speaker:
Dennis Berquist is a 23-year Rotarian and current president of Tucson's Kino Club. He gave us a slide presentation of the free surgical camp in Kenya, specializing in cataract removal and other eye surgeries. Last year they performed 400 cataract
removal procedures in an area of about 1,000,000 people. The need is far greater as they need five surgeons and fifteen staff to adequately address the problem. Last year, Catherine, who leads the District 9212 Rotary Club of Massai Mara in Kenya, donated $15,000 of her own money due to revenue shortcomings. Approximately $200,000 is needed to run the clinic at the levels recommended. In addition, five thousand pairs of reconditioned eye glasses have been distributed.
Dennis is hopeful our club may make a contribution. He plans to soon meet Catherine in person in Kenya.
