Plans are taking shape for the club's Tour de Cookie fund-raising event on March 11, 2023, and a symposium on stopping human trafficking set for April 15, 2023.
Marana Rotary Club, Weekly Meeting
December 27, 2022

The meeting started with social time.

The meeting officially began at 7:08 a.m. with the pledge of allegiance lead by John Dooling. There were 10 members in attendance, about half on Zoom.

Since Andy, our Club Secretary, was not able to attend, Bob Bishop volunteered to record the minutes in his place.

President Laura Clymer then called for Happy Bucks:
  • Randy had wonderful holiday with visiting friends and family. Enjoying the great weather. He also had an entertaining (though a bit scary) story about he and Deb getting lost in the desert on a recent hike. He was able to contact the Doolings, who were able to come to the rescue.
  • Bob was happy that it had “warmed up “ to 32 degrees in VA. Spending quality time with grandkids and family.
  • Beckie was enjoying the grandkids and family who, though it was bad news that the weather had made them cancel their original plans, got to spend more time with Beckie and family.
  • Don was happy that he got to spend “multiple Christmases” with his extended family back East. Experienced a range of weather also with rain and snow.
  • Denise was happy to be able visit family and friends. She was particularly happy that she had met her target sales goals for the year.
  • John Dooling was happy to be able to aid Randy and Deb with their “lost in the desert” episode. He also related some “retirement” dreams he had.
  • Cindy Dooling was happy to have family over and spend time with the grandkids.
  • Cathy was happy to have family from Texas visit and share food and drink.
  • Harold was happy to spend time with his 3 year old granddaughter and was really happy he wasn’t traveling this season with the extreme weather conditions.
  • Because of weather conditions and changes in traveling plans, Laura was able to have a “house full of family and dogs.” While she had planned on quiet time this holiday, it was quite the opposite, but she enjoyed the change in plans.
Moving on to club business, Laura noted that she had received an urgent request from Marco Ramirez regarding the funding of our RYLA applicant, Avery. the cost of $500.00 is needed to pay for the attendance of Avery at the Prescott event coming up soon. Laura will complete and forward a funding request to the Foundation Board so funds can be sent to the District to cover her participation.

The Tour de Cookie will be March 11th, 2023. Laura noted that Dan Contorno will be sending out emails promoting the event. Various ideas regarding promotion were discussed, including ‘table time’ at the Farmer’s Market has we had done last year, and at the Thursday Marana entertainment event.  The need for sponsors and methods to obtain them were discussed in some detail. Website registration capabilities were also discussed. Riders can now sign up online.
Next, we discussed the planned “Human Trafficking Symposium” to be held on April 15th. Randy and Mary are the prime movers behind this effort and have been meeting to discuss everything from meeting areas, program/speaker planning to beverage and refreshments. Current projections are for about 175 participants. This event will not be limited to Rotarians. The title that has been created for the event is “Awareness, Hope and Action.”

There was discussion, pro and con, about charging a registration fee. The District will be providing $2,000 in funding and a Funding Request for an additional $2,000.00 will be made to the club foundation. Web page development for the event was discussed.

The meeting concluded with the Rotary Four Way Test and adjourned at 7:59.

Respectfully Submitted,
Robert G. Bishop
