Marana schools superintendent Dan Streeter updated the club on the innovative ways MUSD is meeting the challenges of a diverse, fast-growing district of more than 12,000 students.
Marana Rotary Club, Weekly Meeting
March 14, 2023

The meeting started with social time.

The meeting officially began at 7:11 AM.

Since Andy, our Club Secretary, was not able to attend, Bob Bishop volunteered to record the minutes in his place.

President Laura Clymer noted that we had several guests and the club greeted them:
  • The Doolings introduced our exchange students; Hania from Poland now attending High School in Nogales, and William from Denmark, now living in Casa Grande.
  • Dan Contorno introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Dan Streeter, Superintendent  of the Marana Unified School District.
President Laura made several announcements:
  • John Dooling had a birthday this month. The club granted him his wish that if we are going to sing Happy Birthday, it would at least be loud. It was at least that!
  • Cindy Dooling was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow 1 Star pin.
  • Bob Bishop was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow 4 Star pin.
It was noted that we had mistakenly skipped the Pledge of Allegiance. Laura had the members rectify that oversight.

President Laura Clymer then called for Happy Bucks:
  • Mark was Happy for the success of the first Tour de Cookie he was able to support and attend.
  • Bob was also pleased with the positive feedback we received from the Tour participants and predicted a strong showing next year.
  • Randy had a wonderful time Cruising the Mexican Riviera.
  • Mary was pleased that the Cookie booths were so successful.
  • John was so pleased to have our exceptional exchange students visiting.
  • William, the exchange student from Denmark, was really enjoying his time with the Doolings.
  • Hania, the exchange student from Poland, also was enjoying spending time with the Doolings and some of her other friends here.
  • Cindy offered a change of pace by conveying how happy she was with the Wildcats performance. Go Wildcats!
  • Cathy was “just happy.”
  • Beckie was also just happy to be here.
  • Don was happy that he finally got to “find his wife” after three weeks when he visited a very cold New York. He was attending by Zoom.
  • Laura was happy for the great weather for the Tour de Cookie and gave great big Thank You to Dan and Beckie for their outstanding contributions to the successful event. She also thanks all those who had participated in supporting the event.
President Laura transitioned to club business by asking g everyone who had outstanding expense receipts from the Tour to turn those in so we can get a final accounting.

John Dooling inquired about the wellbeing of Denise West, who we all miss so much. Mary reported that she had talked to Denise. We don’t really have any details, but she remains in our thoughts.

Dan Contorno then formally introduced MUSD Superintendent, Dan Streeter to the group.

Dr, Streeter gave a comprehensive, PowerPoint enhanced, presentation, entitled: “Inspiring Students to Learn Today and Lead Tomorrow.” His talk highlighted the various challenges and opportunities existing today at the MUSD. He included details about his background, including how he became MUSD Superintendent.

Dr. Streeter noted that the MUSD's enrollment is more than12,000 students with very diverse demographics. MUSD, he noted, was the largest employer in Marana with 1,800 employees, of which, about 700 are teachers.

Despite the challenges created by the pandemic and the constant pressures of budget constraints, Dan outlined his positive vision for now and the future: priorities that include a commitment to early and personalized learning.

His presentation was well received as evidenced by the number of questions from the club members during the closing Q & A.

The meeting concluded with the Rotary 4 Way Test and adjourned at 7:59.

Respectfully Submitted,

Robert G. Bishop

Acting Secretary
