At the monthly business meeting, the club set the date for Tour de Cookie -- March 11, 2023!

Marana Rotary Club

September 27, 2022 weekly meeting

Laura called the all-virtual, business meeting to order at 7 a.m.

Happy Bucks:

  • Beckie was happy for the beautiful day, anticipating the arrival of her granddaughter shortly.
  • Carol thanked Denise for the help resurrecting her jewelry, not expecting such good results!
  • Adam is battling crazy markets. Maybe his business cards to read "financial therapist" instead of "financial advisor".
  • Denise was happy for a great conference and that her burn was healing well
  • Andrea (soon to be a new member!) was happy for a short work week and looking forward to a pre-wedding planning trip to Puerto Vallarta next week. Her wedding is in April 2023! Congratulations!
  • Dan is looking forward to his trip beginning tomorrow to Milwaukee with his father and brother for golfing. Then on to Hawaii for some down time.
  • Richie was happily caring for the new litter of Bernese Mountain dogs. He turned his camera around to show the adorable puppies who are available for adoption! Laura was smitten.
  • Randy is happy for so many good things happening. And for the great turnout at the conference for Don’s reception, which is a very proud moment for our club
  • Mary was grateful for the great conference and being able to get out of the house for the longest period in quite some time.
  • Harold was happy; his daughter and son-in-law surprised him with dinner at Ventana Canyon where the real motive was to induct him into the Manufactured Home Hall of Fame. Harold has been inducted in Kansas and now Arizona. Harold may be the only person to have been inducted into both halls of fame. Way to go Harold!
  • Don was happy for the “terrific” reception at the District Conference recognizing him as District Governor-Elect.
  • Peter was grateful for the conference where he was recognized by many clubs for talks given by him on several occasions. He will be traveling for 2-3 weeks to Kentucky and Tallahassee FL on telescope business. Earlier, Peter spoke to the success of the asteroid Dart mission as our resident scientist
  • Laura was pleased with the conference, especially the pre-conference panel on empowering girls where panelists included the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Southern AZ, a former UA women's basketball coach, and the Dean of Education of the U of A. Laura also mentioned the great response to Cindy Dooling’s table in the House of Friendship which presented information about Rotary Youth Exchange Program.

Announcements

There will be a second round of grants offered by the District for community project funding. The fuse is short for submission. Randy (in concert with Mary, Don and Carol) have been working on a human trafficking, slavery and prostitution symposium aimed at educating the public on the topic and its danger signs. Date targeted is April 2023 and involvement will include law enforcement, non-profits, immigration authorities, parents, elected officials, schools, and guest speakers/panelists. Cozette, from San Diego, is offering her expertise and will travel to attend.

Action Item- Don suggested that the project be submitted to the District for grant funding. Upon discussion, the motion was made to apply for $1,500 in funding to be matched by the District. Upon motion made, the measure was unanimously approved.

Laura asked if Denise could follow up on the rumor that the El Tour de Tucson aid stations were being relocated. Denise will check and report back.

Tour de Cookie date is March 11. Dan will follow up on requirements for insurance and asked that the website address be determined for registration and payment. It was decided that this will be done upon Dan’s return from travels by end of October.

Other important dates:

  • October 28, breakfast for Special Olympics/Olympians, donations expected and registration is required.
  • November 19, El Tour de Tucson aid station. Location to be determined.
  • November 8, the quarterly MCAT Star Student honoree. Action Item Upon discussion by members present, it was decided to award $50 to the honoree; $25 for a Harkins movie pass, and $25 as a Target gift certificate. Members voted to approve unanimously.

  • December 18, Wreath laying honoring veterans, a national event. The wreaths will be laid at the Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at Marana.

Other business

Randy shared that, due to time constraints, he (and Dan) will stop their work on the Marana’s Got Talent initiative. Perhaps this can be taken up in 2024.

Don mentioned that the District will be putting together a short video for Rotary promotional purposes and would like our club to be visible. Photos or video clips of our projects are encouraged.

Don also asked for help heading up the shredding event find raiser. Don’s time will be in high demand for the next year.

Randy suggested that Don’s wife, Kathy, be named honorary member for the year in which Don is serving as District Governor. A motion was made by Peter, which passed unanimously. Laura will notify Kathy of the decision.

Next week’s speaker will be Adam, our resident Financial "Therapist", umm "Advisor".
